SMILE FOR THE CAMERA!
This month is Pet Dental Month and if we’ve been loved by a pet, more than likely we’ve had the misfortune of smelling doggie (or kitty) breath. That odor is not just the leftovers from the last meal but a sign of so much more. After food is consumed, bacteria come in to attack the leftovers, this creates a biofilm (think bacterial ridden goo) attached to the teeth. That goo hardens into plaque and tartar and reaches up under the gum line. Calculus then forms (This is the brown or yellow chunks seen on the teeth) All of this is laden with bacteria creating a nasty odor.
A biofilm (which is just like the film in the toilet bowl, ew!) builds up daily. We recommend daily brushing of your pet’s teeth to eliminate that film before it can harden. Pet tooth paste should be used because it is safe to be swallowed. A child’s tooth brush, a finger brush or even gauze wrapped on your finger can be used to massage the toothpaste onto the outer side of the teeth and gums (the inside is swept clean by the tongue and does not require brushing). If your pet will not allow you to brush there are a number of products endorsed by the veterinary oral health council (www.vohc.org) such as certain chews and sprays.
Keeping your pet's mouth healthy will help prevent periodontal disease, tooth loss, and other health problems. A healthy mouth also leads to nicer kisses!
